Madeleine's parents not suspects

Madeleine McCann

Police in Portugal have closed their investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, and say her parents are no longer suspects.

Madeleine was three years old when she went missing more than a year ago, while on holiday with her family.

Sadly, she has never been found, and now the Portuguese police say they're going to stop looking for her.

But Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have already said they're going to carry on looking for their daughter.

The McCanns want their private investigators to see the police files, so they can carry on the inquiry.

Several people were questioned about the case, including Madeleine's parents, and a British man called Robert Murat. All three were named suspects so they could legally be asked more questions.

But the McCanns and Mr Murat have always said they had nothing to do with her disappearance.

And on Monday, a Portuguese legal chief said they are no longer being called suspects, because the police had found no evidence they had done anything wrong.

Massive story

Madeleine disappeared from her family's holiday villa on 3 May 2007, while her parents were out nearby.

Her mum and dad had been at a nearby restaurant, and were checking on Madeleine and her little brother and sister every half hour.

Really quickly, Madeleine's disappearance became a massive story around the world, because it's so rare for a child to go missing.
