Film review: Kung Fu Panda

Kung Fu Panda

Release date

Kung Fu Panda, out 4 July. It's a PG.

The stars

Jack Black is the voice of Po, a young panda who dreams of being a kung fu star but seems to be better at chopping veggies than he is blocks.

Angelina Jolie and real life kung fu expert Jackie Chan voice Tigress and Monkey, two of Po's idol group, the Furious Five.

The plot

Po the panda is working away miserably in the family noodle café, which his dad wants him to take over one day.

But when the master of the kung fu temple decides it's time to choose the dragon warrior - the best fighter in existence - big, clumsy Po is accidentally selected. He's over the moon to be chosen and can't wait to start training with his idols, the Furious Five, and their master, Shifu.

But some people think Po will never be good enough to be the real dragon warrior. The only way he might prove them wrong is by taking on everyone's arch enemy - the evil, deadly and terrifying snow leopard, Tai Lung.

Will he fight or flee?

Best bits

After dragging Po out into the wilderness to train, Shifu discovers that the best way to make the panda fight is for a bowl of food! The fight that follows is the funniest and best in the whole film - the action will nearly make you dizzy.

Fave characters

Thai Lung is genuinely scary and Po's dad is so silly he'll make you giggle, but the real star is still Po himself - he's so determined and excitable and the lines he comes out with are hilarious!

Any weak bits?

The whole film is definitely one of the better ones so far this year and its setting in a mountain village makes it stand out too, because it's so unusual for an action film. It would have been good to see more of the Furious Five but to be honest, Po's such a cool character that you don't really mind.

Hit or miss?

Pure awesomeness!

Alex, 12, Birmingham, England

"How can people say this is boring? It has a perfect balance between action and comedy with fantastic animation. Jack Black is a comic genius; he was perfect for Po. And Tai Lung is awesome! The only negative thing I have to say is it's a bit unrealistic in parts with Tai Lung. 9/10."

Rosie, 12, London, England

"Am I the only one thinking this film was very poor, maybe because the hype made you expect something amazing? Don't get me wrong, I love animation, like Bee Movie, but this film was just really bad. Maybe four-year-olds will see this, but I doubt anyone else."

Naomi, 10, Sydney, Australia

"I really enjoyed Kung Fu Panda as it has an important message that you can do anything if you believe in yourself. I loved the part where Tai Lung got sat on. Po is a very loveable character. I wish there was more Furious Five kung fu action."
