England cut Zimbabwe ties

Robert Mugabe

Zimbabwe's cricket team have been banned from playing in England because of trouble in the African country.

There is lots of violence in Zimbabwe at the moment, and many people blame this on supporters of the President, Robert Mugabe.

The UK government told the people in charge of English and Welsh cricket not to play Zimbabwe, as a protest against the fighting.

The International Cricket Council will discuss a possible world ban next week.

Zimbabwe are set to play two Tests and three home one-day internationals in England early next summer, before the Twenty20 World Cup.

Violence

Violence in Zimbabwe has been set off by elections to choose a new president.

The main party opposing Mr Mugabe, the MDC, say their supporters have been beaten or even killed by the president's supporters.

That has led Morgan Tsvangirai, the MDC's leader, to pull out of the contest.

But Robert Mugabe says Tsvangirai pulled out of the election because he knew he would lose, and has said people are spreading lies about him and his followers.
