Book review: Ginger Snaps

Ginger Snaps by Cathy Cassidy

Author

Cathy Cassidy

Publication date

Out on 3 July in hardback.

Characters

The main character is 12-year-old Ginger, she's just starting Year 8 and is trying to keep her life before secondary school a secret.

Her best friend Shannon is fun, but she can be a bit selfish at times.

There is also geeky but straight-talking Emily and the slightly weird saxophone playing Sam, who has a bit of a crush on Ginger!

These characters are very true to life, you'll definitely recognise people you know in them.

Plot

This book is about friendship and fitting in. Ginger used to be bullied at primary school and thinks hers luck's changed when the pretty and popular Shannon wants to be her friend.

When an old friend reappears and upsets the balance of their cosy twosome, Ginger is forced to re-assess their friendship. After all, Shannon can often be mean and bossy - is this how a real best friend would act?

A new boy at school also catches Ginger's eye, Shannon totally disapproves as he really isn't one of the cool kids. Ginger has some important decisions to make about where her loyalties lie and what really makes her happy.

Highlights

This book has some really funny and touching moments, such as the birthday party that descends into mayhem and when Ginger visits Sam on his house boat, but there isn't one bit which really stands out above the rest.

Although, watch out as Shannon starts to show her true colours. As her character develops, you start to wonder just how low she will to stoop to get what she wants.

Any weak bits?

If you want an action-packed read full of danger and suspense, then this probably isn't the book for you.

If you want to read a great story with excellent characters and that's guaranteed to make you smile, then you should definitely give this a go.

Unputdownable?

Definitely! A great girly read that will also make you think!

"I bought Ginger Snaps as soon as it came out. I read it really quickly and thought it was brilliant. I had finished it by 4th July! I don't think it was advertised as much as it should have been, though. Some of my friends only just discovered it!"

Saffron, 12, Hull, England

"Ginger Snaps was good but I thought it could have been a lot better. I thought the characters' names were stupid. Who is really called Ginger??? I think it was one of her weak books!"

Lucie, 10, York, England

"I really liked this book and I could read it over and over again."

Adele, 10, Bow, Scotland

"I just finished this book and I loved it! My favourite character was Sam because he was really funny and he didn't let what people said bother him. It had a clear storyline and is definitely Cathy Cassidy's best so far. The only problem with it was it was a bit short - bring on the sequel!!!"
