Typhoon smashes into Philippines

A devastating typhoon has smashed into the Philippines causing chaos for thousands of people.

Typhoon Fengshen hit the islands at the weekend, causing flash floods and landslides which have killed more than 150 people and left thousands homeless.

Hundreds of ferry passengers are also missing after their ship capsized in the wild weather. So far, coastguards say they've found only three survivors.

Rescuers are battling gale force winds and rain searching for the passengers.

The ferry capsized in central Philippines with more than 700 people on board.

It's thought it began to sink several miles from the shore after its engines failed.

Back on the mainland, trees were uprooted, streets flooded and cars stranded as winds of up to 120 miles per hour whipped through the south and central parts of the country.

Hundreds of villages have been affected by power cuts and thousands of people have seen their homes destroyed.

Moving north

Typhoons are not unusual in the Philippines - this is the sixth this year - but this one is much stronger than usual.

Weather experts are warning there could be more problems on the way as the typhoon is expected to move north and hit Taiwan in the next few days.
