Dazzling Dutch thrash Italians

Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar (L) prepares to catch a shot by Italian forward Luca Toni

The Dutch team brought the Euro 2008 contest to life, thrashing world champions Italy 3-0 with a great display of footie skills.

Ruud van Nistelrooy put the Dutch ahead after 26 minutes, but the goal was controversial as he looked offside.

Wesley Sneijder got a second goal five minutes later before Giovanni van Bronckhorst headed in after 80 minutes.

Elsewhere, there was a goalless draw between France and Romania with both sides failing to impress on the pitch.

It was the Netherlands' first win over the Italians in nine attempts over 30 years - their last success coming in the 1978 World Cup - and Italy's worst-ever defeat in a European Championship.
