Helen at Euro 2008 opening match

Helen watching the match

Euro 2008 is under way, the first games of the tournament were played on Saturday, and the fans were out in force.

The tournament runs until 29th June and involves 16 nations.

Helen was in Basel in Switzerland, where the first game was played...

Saturday was my second day in Basel, but the moment we stepped out of the door on Saturday morning it was almost as if we had been transported overnight.

Football fans
The place was totally different.

The streets were busy, people were walking around with football shirts on and their faces painted with the flags of different nations.

Loads of shops and cafes had stalls on the streets selling drinks and food, clearly they were getting ready for all the footy fans expected to flock to Basel for the opening game.

Helen in the stadium
Even though the match was a sell out I managed to get a ticket for the game between Switzerland and The Czech Republic.

I was amazed that the fans had not been obviously split.

It seemed like there were fans from both nation spread throughout the ground, I have never seen that before.

Switzerland were a tad unlucky not to take a point from the game. They lost 1-0.

Helen crossing her fingers
Following the match I made my way back into Basel to watch my new team Portugal in their first game against Turkey.

The games are being spread throughout Austria and Switzerland and without a ticket I watched the match on one of the big screens that had been put up in the city.

Helen celebrating
What a brilliant start to the tournament. We won 2-0 and I was delighted!

There were hardly any Portugal fans around, but I celebrated and am feeling confident ahead of our next game.
