Man teaches baby bird how to fly

The heron being taught how to fly

A man in Cornwall who adopted a baby heron has been teaching the little chick how to fly!

Garry Zammit started caring for the bird when its parents got lost in a storm, and named him Dude.

But usually, birds learn how to take to the sky from their parents, so poor Dude had no-one to show him how.

So Mr Zammit began giving Dude lessons himself, by running beside him and flapping his arms wildly, and squawking!

Mr Zammit first tried to encourage the baby bird to fly by tempting him along with food.

But that didn't work, so he's started showing the bird how to do it himself.

He said: "I ended up getting really involved and running alongside him, flapping my arms like an idiot."

But he said it was a "wonderful sight" when Dude managed lift-off.
