Lizo reviews ninth episode of Dr Who

Forest of the Dead

Our Doctor Who superfan Lizo reviews the ninth episode of the fourth series - Forest of the Dead.

Last week's cliff-hanger had the Doctor, River Song and the surviving members of her crew trapped in the Library, pursued by deadly shadows and a skeleton in a space suit.

Forest of the Dead
What's the answer to the mystery?
The Doctor, devastated at losing Donna, knows that if they're going to survive he needs to solve the mystery of what the little girl has to do with the Library. But he also wants to find out what his relationship with River Song is.

Where the first episode was terrifying, this story has a much more eerie atmosphere, as it gradually becomes clear what's really been happening in the Library.

Top monster

The most difficult thing about a story like this, which is a second part, is resolving all the different elements set up in the first part. But this episode manages it admirably.

Forest of the Dead
Keep out of the shadows
But it does mean that the scare factor goes down along the way.

Which is a shame because this two-parter contains one of the most successful monsters the series has ever produced.

Still, this is made up for by the clever way that writer Steven Moffat brings the story to a conclusion.

Add on an exceptionally moving and emotional ending, and the result is a wonderfully satisfying episode.

Four and a half out of five

Your Comments

"I think this was good. It was a little confusing and some of my friends found it boring!"

Alicia, 13, Estinnes, Belgium

"It was quite confusing and they didn't explain the end very well."

Luke, 9, Durham, England

"At the end, I almost cried because it was so happy."

Skye, 8, Kincardineshire, Scotland

"I thought that Forest of the Dead was a BIG disappointment, but I did like River Song."

Robyn, 11, Cambridge, England

"I didn't like this episode much. It was too confusing. And River Song is really arrogant."

Millie, 13, Wolverhampton, England

"I loved this episode!!! It was a great storyline, and the ending was fantastic!!! I think that Stephen Moffat will be fab as head writer, but I will miss Russell T Davies!!!"

Amy, 12, Wirral, England

"It was a completely genius storyline! All my guesses as to what was going to happen were about as wrong as you can get. I didn't like the very very intimate relationship between the Doctor and River Song though. It spoils the fact that Rose is coming back by pretty much knowing he loves someone else more :( But it was a brilliant episode (apart from that)"

Naomi, 14, Holme Hale, England

"I thought it was a really well written and brilliantly shot episode. I'm really glad Moffat's taking over as head writer!"

Tania, 14, London, England

"The best episode of the series so far. Moffat should be proud. He has put the scare factor back into Doctor Who. I thought this episode was fantastic. Good acting from Tennant and Tate as usual!"

Hannah, 12, York, England

"I thought it was brilliant! Absolutely loved it. Great ending and great second episode. Steven Moffat never fails to impress. And Miss Evangelista's shock return was cleverly done. 10/10."

Liam, 13, Cambridge

"I thought this episode was absolutely brilliant! The shadows were as deadly and as terrifying as before! I thought it was dead sad when Donna's children disappeared, and when her husband tried to call her, before she left in the TARDIS. Steven Moffat was definitely the star of this show."

Emma, 12, Manchester, England

"I wasn't too keen on this episode. I didn't think we knew enough about the character River Song and what relationship she actually had with the Doctor. it didn't flow well enough and I though the Piranhas of the Air were the worst monsters ever. Thank lord Russell T Davies is back for the last episodes. The worst episode so far this series."

Ryan, 13, Oxford

"It was brilliant. I really enjoyed it. My best part was when the Doctor saved Professor River Song."

David, 10, Clydebank

"Weird, but funky. It had a complicated plot and it was eerie and had me on the edge of my seat."

Riri, 12, St Ives, England

"He is great I've watched every single one!"

Sophie, 8, Seaford, England

"My favourite episode so far."

Jake, 12, Basildon, England

"Thought it was a fantastic episode! It has left me wanting more answers about what the future holds for the Dr, Donna and River Song. Very exciting!"

Bella, 14, Bury St Edmunds, England

"It Was ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!!!"

Ingrid, 13, Lancashire, England

"Both episodes eight and nine were extremely confusing and frustrating to watch (or maybe I'm just stupid) in a good but annoying way. The way River whispered the Doctor's real name to him and the way we will never know who she was will always be horrible to get your head round. Similarly, his daughter returning to life without regenerating is also annoying and unbearable...sorry!"

Hannah, 14, Guildford, England

"It was so scary!! I couldn't bear to watch the twisted face of the dead lady and at first I didn't get where Donna was!!"

Nadia, 10, London, England
