We found out how compost is made

Compost! It's sometimes mentioned in stories about helping the environment but do you know how it's made?

Press Packer Joseph and his classmates went on a special visit to a compost producer to find out exactly what goes into it.

Here's his story.

"We spent an hour at a site learning all about compost and how it is made up.

It's made of brown stuff, green stuff, air and water.

Heat up

The brown stuff is dead plants and all that kind of stuff. The green stuff is grass cuttings and leaves.

They let it heat up so it rots together then it goes through big machines that break it down into small bits.

There are little bugs in the machine, little insects like beetles, they mash it all down and help it turn into compost.

Dead plants

It goes to another machine that takes the logs and any bits of metal or plastic stuff out and then it's all bagged up.

It will be useable compost in 12 weeks.

The first bit of the process smelled a bit of dead plants and mud but by the end it doesn't really smell.

Good day out

I think it's good to compost your rubbish - it helps plants grow, it helps the environment, and provides food for little creatures.

I learned how important compost is and our school brought some back.

It was a good day out, loads better than normal classes."
