Search for balloon record priest

Father Adelir de Carli

Rescue workers are searching for a priest who went missing off the coast of South America while trying to break a record for flying with balloons.

Father Adelir de Carli took off from a port in Brazil on Sunday attached to 1,000 helium balloons.

He left with a parachute, satellite phone and a device to help him find his way, but hasn't been seen since.

Planes, helicopters and boats are now searching the area after pieces of his balloons were found on a beach.

Father Carli was trying to break a 19-hour record for the most hours flying with balloons.

He's thought to have floated up to 6,000 metres high, before falling to about 2,500 metres.

Trouble

On Sunday, he spoke to a TV channel on his satellite phone and told them he was "very cold, but fine".

But he said he was having trouble using the device to help him find out where he was.

Father Carli was trying to raise money for a place for lorry drivers to rest at one of Brazil's major ports.
