How I adopted an African Penguin

What would your ideal prize be if you won a competition? Your fave DVD? Maybe a trip around the world?

Press Packer Olivia won something that you would never expect, and she wants to let everyone know...

African Penguins in South Africa

"I won an art project at school, and got to adopt an African Penguin!

Our school arranged a trip down to a local marina aquarium, we had to study the fish and then draw them.

There were lots of different types, like sharks and tropical fish. I like angel fish the most. They are brightly coloured and quite big.

Group work

We had to get in to groups and study ecology, which is a scientific study of how living things interact with their environment, like how fish interact with seaweed.

We then had to come up with a project. At the beginning it was a bit daunting, because it was a really big task.

Ours was a giant shark with a papier mache world, and in the background it said 'time is running out'.

This was to show that because of global warming we need to do something, and the shark was a predator, trying to catch the world.

Prizes

Our work was judged, and then certificates were pinned on them.

Our group scored 180 out of 200, which meant we won a prize at a local coastal zoo.

We chose to adopt an African Penguin, which means for a year we get newsletters about what they are doing, and a plaque by their enclosure with our individual names on.

When we found out we had won a prize I was really happy and excited, and so was the rest of my group!
