Torch ceremony cancelled in Paris

A reception to welcome the Olympic torch to France has been called off after anti-China protesters caused chaos as it was paraded through Paris.

The relay itself was cut short in the city after demonstrations held things up and brought unrest to the streets.

China hosts the Games later this year. The torch is being taken across the world before the opening ceremony.

But people angry about China's rule over Tibet and other issues have followed the torch on its journey.

On Sunday, 37 people were arrested as demonstrators tried to disrupt the torch's journey through London.

Protesters are upset about the way China rules Tibet, and the way the Chinese Government treats Tibetan people.

Around 500 protesters were involved in the demonstrations in France's capital, mainly near famous landmark the Eiffel Tower.

Security was extremely tight, with around 3,000 police on duty, riding motorcycles, jogging or on skates.

The torch was lit in Olympia, Greece, last week and will go through 20 countries before being carried into the Beijing Games opening ceremony on 8 August.

The Tibet situation is complicated. In March this year, people demonstrated in Tibet because they don't want it to be ruled by China, and a number of people died.
