Big election starts in Zimbabwe

Voting has started

People in the African nation of Zimbabwe are voting in an election to choose who will lead the country.

It will decide whether Robert Mugabe, who has been in power since 1980, will become president for a sixth time.

The challengers are former minister Morgan Tsvangirai and independent candidate Simba Makoni.

There are concerns that the vote will be fixed, but when Mr Mugabe was asked about this after the polls opened, he said: "We don't rig elections."

Soldiers

Reports say many people arrived at polling stations early, to make sure they could get their vote.

Soldiers were on patrol in many areas in a bid to stop any violence.

The first results are expected to come through on Monday, with the winner having to get at least half of the vote for a firm victory.
