Olympic torch lit despite protest

Protesters got past 1,000 police officers to demonstrate at a ceremony in Greece to light the torch for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Before the ceremony, people unhappy about recent violence in Tibet in Asia had vowed to hold demonstrations.

A protester with a flag ran up behind a man from the group organising the Games in Beijing as he spoke.

The demonstrator was taken away by police, and the torch was lit and will now be carried through 20 countries.

Actors wearing ancient Greek costumes acted out an old ritual for lighting the torch at the site of Olympia.

The ceremony at the Temple of Hera is a very historical one, and re-enacts the first ancient Olympics.

The torch was lit by channelling light from the sun's rays, using a shiny steel mirror.

It will travel over Mount Everest and into Tibet, before arriving in Beijing for the Games on 8 August.

It is thought the protesters were demonstrating about the recent violence in Tibet in Asia.

People have been demonstrating in Tibet because they don't want it to be ruled by China, and a number of people have died.
