Golden Compass wins effects Oscar

Nicole Kidman

The most famous stars in the world were out in force to see if they had scooped a top prize at the glitzy Oscars ceremony on Sunday night.

It was good news for the Golden Compass, starring Nicole Kidman, which got the prize for best special effects.

Ratatouille was up for five awards, but in the end it only got one, for best animated feature film.

It was bad news for 13-year-old Saoirse Ronan, who was nominated for best supporting actress, but didn't win it.

Ratatouille has been scooping lots of awards recently, and the Oscar for best cartoon film is a really important award.

But the film lost out in four other categories. They were best original screen play, best soundtrack, and two others for sound.

Meanwhile, The Golden Compass beat off competition from two huge films - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and Transformers - to scoop the best visual effects award.
