Should kids choose their school uniform?

School kids bbc

Children in Wales might be given a choice of what to wear to lessons, because politicians think some school uniforms are too expensive.

They want to make uniforms simpler and more affordable for everyone.

Trainers are one thing they want to see more of, because they're thought to be better for children's feet than some shoes, and could make kids more active.

But things like blazers and caps could be on their way out.

Do YOU think the plans are a good idea?

Are you happy with your uniform the way it is now, or do you think it should be changed?

"I think that if we wear our own clothes then children will fight over who has the best and get jealous."

Charlotte, 11, Derbyshire, England

"I think having a uniform is good because you look smart and grown up. Wearing your own clothes once a week would be fun!"

Jessie, 12, Birmingham, England

"Wearing school uniform is a good idea because in our school uniforms nobody knows who is poor and who is rich - we are all equal."

Larna, 11, Birmingham, England

"Uniform is a waste of time, some people can't afford uniform so I think that it should be banned."

Kayleigh, 13, Haslingdon, England

"I think uniform is a great idea as it shows you belong and you don't have to decide what you want to wear everyday. Also, kids may get teased because of what they wear."

Fozia, 13, Preston, England

"I think that school uniform is a good idea. It means you are less likely to be picked on for not being able to afford nice clothes or buy them from posh shops when other children might."

Helen, 12, Worcester, England

"I think school uniforms should be allowed because if you go on a school trip you might just get completely lost."

Benjamin, 11, Devon, England

"Uniform doesn't give us any personality and it really makes you feel like you're not unique, which we all are."

Frogs, 13, Cheshire, England

"I don't think school uniforms are a good idea because if you can't afford a uniform then you can get in trouble."

Sunny, 9, Newcastle, England

"I think it is fair for children in Wales to wear their own clothes because most school uniforms are expensive."

Jessica, 10, Wolverhampton, England

"We get to wear our own clothes at school, but it takes so long to decide what to wear. Plus it ends up more expensive having to buy more outfits. They should definitely make school uniform more affordable."

Hannah, 15, England

"My feet hurt after walking the 2-3 miles home in my school shoes. It's much better in trainers."

Zoe, 14, Yorkshire, England

"We should have a say on school uniform, it's not fair!"

Jessica, 12, Burnley, England

"We have to wear polo shirts and they look scruffy. I want a blouse, tie and blazer."

Ilana, 9, Norwich, England

"I think school uniforms are good and not really that expensive as normal clothes cost a lot more to buy."

Brendan, 7, Hampshire, England

"I wear school uniform five and a half days a week and I never get sick of it. I really don't mind wearing it although it can be annoying at times. Wearing it shows how smart we look and we can show what school we attend. Uniform is part of my morning routine."

Lucy, 11, York, England

"I hate school uniform and I think it would be really great if we could wear what we want! Most people don't even wear their uniforms tidily so if we wore what we wanted we would actually look smarter and it would be much more comfy."

Abi, 12, Newport, Wales

"I don't mind wearing my own clothes, but there are some people who are scared to wear clothes because of what people will think, but I don't mind."

Amina, 11, Cardiff, Wales

"School uniform is rubbish, it costs too much and it's hard to play football in at break."

Connor, 11, Port Talbot, Wales

"In France we don't have school uniforms and I think this makes us individual and more free. I wore school uniform for five years in Scotland and I found it very dull."

Suzanne, 10, Riberac, France

"I think uniform helps me concentrate at school. However, we should be able to customise it to show our personality and style."

Lauren, 13, Derby, England

"I hate getting up in the morning and looking for my uniform, but if I didn't have a uniform I would be there for half the morning deciding what to wear."

Fiona, 10, County Donegal, Northern Ireland

"School uniform sucks! It restricts our individuality. Who wants to look like everyone else anyway?"

Sarah, 13, Belfast, Northern Ireland

"School uniform is rubbish, it's boring. We should at least be able to design our own style, not the same boring stuff. Our school has had the same uniform for years!"

Alex, 11, Cirencester, England

"We should keep the school uniform because some families find it cheaper to buy a uniform than clothes!"

Danielle, 12, Hull, England

"Uniforms give us equality, it would also be easier to bunk off school if there was no uniform."

Modupe, 12, Essex, England

"I think that we should be able to wear our own shoes because I slipped the other day in my school shoes because it is so slippery and trainers have more grip."

Eleri, 12, Llandeilo, Wales

"You should have the choice to wear what you want because the school keeps on saying be an individual."

Harry, 13, Coventry, England

"I think school uniform is a good idea because if you are on a school trip and you get lost people will know which school you are with."

Megan, 7, Derbyshire, England

"I think that children should be able to wear their own clothes to school, but not designer clothes."

Polly, 11, London, England

"At my school we don't have to wear uniform and hardly anyone does. I like it because I can wear what I want."

Bee, 8, London, England

"School uniform should be kept as I go to a school without a uniform and it is really hard finding an outfit that you haven't already worn that week!"

Elisha, 14, Birmingham, England

"I think there would be more bullying because some kids would wear designer clothes and they would pick on other kids that don't have them. The uniforms are way too expensive and should be brought down in price."

Robert, 13, Port Talbot, Wales

"I think we should have the choice to wear school uniform or not, because some kids might be embarrassed of what they wear. I would probably wear my school shirt with jeans and a hoodie because I'm proud of my school but I still love wearing my own clothes!"

Luci, 11, Essex, England

"I don't think school uniforms should be scrapped. Teachers would lose a lot of control over the children and the poorer kids would stand out easily!"

Rory, 9, Monmouth, Wales

"I think everyone should wear school uniform, it makes you all feel the same when you are at school."

Kyla, 12, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

"If I could wear trainers in school I would do more exercise... and lets face it, we all need it!"

"Uniforms are too expensive. I think you should be able to wear what you want to school, as long as it isn't too over the top."

Bethan, 12, Cwmbran, Wales

"I think it is a good idea to have uniforms because people might come in wearing designer clothes and think you're poor if you're not wearing the latest fashions!"

Megan, 12, County Down, Northern Ireland

"I think kids should not have to wear school uniform because it costs a lot to buy it and it saves washing uniform every day."

"I think it's a great idea! School uniforms are so uncomfortable. I wish I lived in Wales!"

"They're so expensive! My mum had to pay just over 100 for ours - they should be free. Our school has a second-hand option now which is better."

Steph, 13, Lancashire, England

"I think kids should be allowed to choose what their school uniform looks like. In my school we have to wear a skirt and in the winter it is really cold, so I think we should have the choice of skirts or trousers."

"I think school uniform is a bad idea because how you dress lets you express yourself and be individual."

Grace, 11, Greater London, England

"I think this is fair, but people who visit the school might think that the school isn't that SMART!"

Adam, 13, Essex, England

"I think we should be able to wear whatever we want because uniform is too expensive. Uniform has nothing to do with education!"

Amy, 13, Stockport, England

"I've been in a school with uniform for most of my life and I've seen that it helps everyone to feel like a team and behave appropriately. Plus, school becomes less of a popularity contest and it takes less time to get ready. Go uniforms!"

Sara, 12, Geneva, Switzerland

Demi, 13, Corringham, England

"I think school uniform is good because everyone looks the same and you can't tell who is rich or poor. I don't like non-uniform days because some people show off about their clothes and trainers. Uniforms should be stuff you can get from the supermarket and ordinary shops, not just expensive stuff with badges on."

Paul , 9, Horsham, England
