City celebrates culture capital

Liverpool launches its year as Europe's "Capital of Culture"

Tens of thousands of people joined in a massive night of celebrations in Liverpool to help kick off the city's year as Europe's "Capital of Culture".

Musicians helped get the party started by blasting out tunes from a 100ft-high rooftop in the city centre, to launch a year of events to mark the occasion.

Over the weekend, 1,300 performers will be showing off their talents.

It's hoped more than 350 events planned for the coming year will help to bring an extra 2m visitors to the city.

More than 1,000 school kids are involved with the weekend's celebrations, taking part in a musical extravaganza at the city's new Echo Arena.

The free 40-minute launch party featured fireworks and acrobats as well as famous Liverpudlian musicians.

Ringo Starr, who used to be the drummer for a very famous band called The Beatles, opened the show with a drum solo.

And Liverpool band The Wombats performed their new single, which comes out on Monday.
