Rescued horses responding to care

The rescue effort

More than 80 neglected horses and donkeys that were found in a field with loads of dead animals are being looked after by sanctuaries across the UK.

The RSPCA animal charity rescued the animals from a farm near Amersham, in Buckinghamshire, where 32 dead horses, ponies and donkeys were found.

Staff and vets said the scene was the worst they had ever encountered.

A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and criminal damage.

The neglected animals have been taken to sanctuaries around the UK where they are being tested for disease and nursed back to health.

A spokeswoman for the Horse Trust said the animals were responding to treatment, but it could take up to a year before they are fully recovered.

It's not yet been revealed who was meant to be caring for the creatures, but an RSPCA spokesman said the charity was likely to be taking them to court.
