Premier clubs in FA Cup struggle

Calvin Andrew of Luton challenges Liverpool's Sami Hyypia

Liverpool and Newcastle are facing FA Cup third round replays after failing to beat their lower league opposition.

Luton may be struggling in league one, but they held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at home to earn a replay at Anfield.

Peter Crouch put Liverpool ahead with just 16 minutes to go, but an own goal by Jon Arne Riise gave Luton the draw.

Elsewhere, Championship side Stoke held Newcastle to a goalless draw, keeping the pressure up on Magpies' manager Sam Alladyce.

Stoke substitute Jon Parkin nearly put the home side ahead with his first touch, but a heroic goal-line save by Steven Taylor helped to keep Newcastle in the competition.

After losing their last three matches, Newcastle will now be hoping to win their replay at St James' Park on 16 January.

Luton face Liverpool at Anfield on 15 January.
