New Year celebrated around globe

New Year's fireworks in Sydney, Australia

Millions of people around the world have celebrated the arrival of 2008.

Some 700,000 people got together in London - many on the banks of the Thames to see the fireworks at the London Eye and to hear Big Ben chime.

In Edinburgh, about 100,000 folk enjoyed a street party, with about 15,000 in Glasgow's George Square.

In Cardiff, some 30,000 people joined in the Calennig celebrations at Cardiff Castle, and 5,500 celebrated at an open air concert in Belfast.

New Zealand was one of the first places to greet the New Year, and in Australia, there was a huge firework display in Sydney.

And the fun isn't over yet, as lots of places are carrying on with their celebrations.

London will host a big parade, which is expected to be watched by nearly half a million people.
