Should we have more wind farms?

Wind turbines off the coast of Great Yarmouth

Every home in Britain might be wind-powered by 2020, according to new Government plans.

To make that possible, thousands of wind turbines could be installed off the coast of the UK. But should we have more wind farms?

Do you think they're too ugly to be dotted around the UK? Maybe you like the way they look or think it's a small price to pay to be environmentally friendly?

And what about their effect on animals? Are you worried that more wind farms will mean more birds get hurt?

"I think we shouldn't have wind farms because birds get killed."

Paige, 11, Wiltshire, England

"I think it's a great idea! It will produce loads of energy and won't put dangerous gases into the air. Plus they don't make a sound and I think they look beautiful."

Lilly, 11, Nottinghamshire, England

"I think they are a very good idea. Lots of people really want them but don't want them on their doorstep. I would have a wind farm in my back garden if I had to."

Jade, 12, Dorset, England

"I think that the poor animals are getting hurt because of this and I am worried about them. I don't see what good it does for people anyway."

Isabel, 9, London, England

"I think it's a good idea in some ways but if you live in a pretty countryside village then the wind farms would spoil the look of it."

David, 10, Leicester, England

"Everyone will probably think this is strange, but I think it's all the stuff they are doing up in space that's causing global warming. Why don't they just worry about what's happening on Earth?"

Claire, 11, Omagh, Northern Ireland

"Alright, they might break up the countryside a bit but in thousands of years there won't be any countryside left to protect if we don't do something about it now!"

Georgia, 13, England

"The wind farms sound good but don't you think we should try them out more to see if they work? They could cause damage without us expecting it!"

Eve, 10, Craigavon, Northern Ireland

"Everyone has been saying that we need to help the environment and that's exactly what the government is doing! If using wind farms gives us energy in a way that is good for the environment, why are people complaining?"

Lamin, 12, Birmingham, England

"Wind farms are better for the environment as they use wind power to generate electricity. This means it is renewable as opposed to finite. "

Alice, 11, London, England

"Beautiful or ugly, we have to cure this mess we have got this world into and if the turbines help then count me in!"

Janet, 12, Middlesex, England

"There are many wind farms on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland and it ruins the scenery, scares the sheep and cows and it is really, really loud. I don't think they should put any more up."

Mairi, 11, Glasgow, Scotland

"The problem with wind farms is that they don't generate enough electricity. I believe the future of getting energy would be nuclear power, look at France for example."

Matthew, 13, London, England

"If people think they are ruining the countryside then let's paint them green."

Catherine, 12, England

"It's a good idea and a not so good idea. If you lived near one it would be noisy and block out the light. If you lived somewhere else you would benefit from it more."

Katie, 9, Nottingham, England

"I think that they are a great idea because they can get us loads of electricity and they don't destroy the planet - plus they look pretty cool!"

Sam, 12, Hexham, England

"I think it would be a big change to the UK and even though they look ugly they might turn out to help the world from pollution."

Michaela, 10, Glasgow, Scotland

"I think that they are the best thing to put up to help the world. Just think we have put up with pylons which are ugly so we should all be more happy with them."

Luc, 12, Cornwall, England

"It's going to waste space across the sea and it will look silly. It will also make it hard for ships to sail through them."

Tamara, 12, Essex, England

"I think that wind farms are a good idea. I live near the coast and I think they look much better than the oil rigs that most of us are getting our electricity from! Yes, they are expensive but the source is renewable."

Sarah, 12, Norwich, England

"I think we should have more wind farms as they are very good for the environment and good for the climate too..."

Will, 11, Droitwich, England

"I think whatever helps the planet should be encouraged to be built. After all, they don't cause many problems."

Isabelle, 10, New Malden, England

"I try to do my best for the environment and I'm really scared of what might become of the world because of global warming. So, if they reduce pollution then bring 'em on!"

Mohsin, 11, Bradford, England

"I think that we should have wind farms because it is important we find other sources of energy as fossil fuels are running out."

Fifi, 12, Canterbury, England

"I think we should not have too many, but just enough."

Robert, 8, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland

"I am in the eco-committee and I appreciate wind farms because they will help the environment."

Charlotte, 9, Houston, Scotland

"I think wind farms are a good idea because they are nice to look at and even if they make a lot of noise it is more eco friendly."

Lauren, 13, Cheshire, England

"I don't think we should have more wind farms because it makes our country look ugly and people might not be able to catch fish because the wind farms might harm wildlife."

Chloe, 9, Basildon, England

"I think the government shouldn't have more wind farms because it could harm the sea life and I think we have enough wind farms already."

Rebecca, 11, Kent, England

"I think it would be a good idea because we can have more electricity and we would play tornadoes at their own game. And it does not matter what it looks like."

Robert, 13, Somerset, England

"Yes I do think that we should have more wind farms because if global warming IS real then we could all (as a world) fight to prevent it."

Monica, Falkirk Scotland

"I'm not sure. It's great if you live in the city because you can benefit from it massively and we'd lose so much pollution from not having coal factories. If you lived in the countryside it'd be horrible having these big noisy generators spoiling the country. If only there was a way to make them smaller..."

Leona, 13, Cheshire, England

"I think that wind farms are a good idea because we can have more electricity."

Lauren, 10, Stockton, England
