England wants to host World Cup

The World Cup trophy

English football bosses have said they want to host the sport's biggest competition - the World Cup - in 2018.

The tournament takes place every four years and the next two are already planned - with South Africa hosting the event in 2010 and Brazil in 2014.

But the host for 2018 tournament hasn't been decided yet and England's footie bosses really want to do it.

But it's thought other countries want to host it too - including China, Australia, Mexico and America.

The decision on who hosts the tournament is made by members of Fifa, who are in charge of football around the world.

They will decide where the tournament will be played at a big meeting in October 2009.

Now football bosses will have to try to convince Fifa members that their country is the best place for the World Cup.

The World Cup has been held in England once before - in 1966. That was the last time England won the tournament.
