Dolphin fitted with new tail

Winter the bottle nose dolphin

Winter the bottle nose dolphin has been fitted with a new tail after she got it caught in a trap.

Winter is the star of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida in America and two years ago rescuers found the young dolphin tangled in a crab trap.

She was hurt very badly. Her tail fell off and she became extremely ill.

But after months of preparation and training a specialist team has made her a new tail.

It was a long process. The team had to take a caste first - which is like a mould - so they knew how big to make the false tail.

For the last two years Winter has had to learn to swim like a shark but vets are worried that could eventually damage her spine.

Her new tail will have to be redesigned every few months as she grows but her carers are confident it will work and she'll be able to wow the crowds with her jumps once again.
