Huge fine for US music downloader

Jammie Thomas

If you download music, you might want to make sure you're doing it legally after an American woman was given a massive fine for illegal downloading.

Jammie Thomas, 32, of Minnesota, has to pay 109,000 for offering to share 24 songs online.

But the fine could have been millions, as record companies said she illegally shared a total of 1,702 songs.

Ms Thomas was the first person accused of illegal file-sharing who decided to fight the case in court.

The music business is fed up with people sharing files because no money goes to the record companies or the artists that made the music in the first place.
