Champions League teams celebrate

Arsenal's Tomas Rosicky and Jesus Navas of Sevilla

It was a good night for British teams in the Champions League with Arsenal, Manchester United and Rangers all winning their opening matches.

Arsenal won 3-0 against Sevilla, with a Julien Escude own goal and strikes from Robin van Persie and Eduardo.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winner for United in their 1-0 defeat of his former club, Sporting Lisbon.

Elsewhere, Rangers were celebrating at Ibrox after fighting back to clinch a 2-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart.

Mario Gomez put the visitor's ahead early in the second half but Charlie Adam curled in an equaliser soon after and Jean Claude Darcheville sealed the win with a penalty in the 74th minute.

Sevilla gave Arsenal an early scare in their Champions league debut, with near misses from Jesus Navas and Freddie Kanoute.

But a shot from Cesc Fabregas deflected of Escude and put Arsenal ahead before the break and the Gunners went from strength to strength.

In Portugal, Ronaldo got a warm reception from the Portuguese fans for his low-key response to scoring from Wes Brown's cross after 61 minutes.

Wayne Rooney made a quiet comeback after recovering from his broken foot and Edwin van der Sar did his bit to protect United's lead with some great saves.
