David Tennant takes to the stage

David Tennant

Doctor Who star David Tennant is swapping his Tardis for the stage as he takes a break from the sci-fi series.

After the fourth series has been on TV next year, David will be strutting his stuff on stage as Hamlet with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Many people think William Shakespeare is the best playwright ever and Hamlet is one of his more famous tragedies.

He even featured in an episode of Doctor Who when he met the Doctor and helped him to save the planet.

The play will run from August 2008, which is normally when filming for the next series of Doctor Who starts.

But TV bosses have already said there won't be a new series in 2009, giving David the time to do other things.

Instead, fans will have to make do with three Doctor Who specials before they can watch the fifth series in 2010.
