Madeleine's parents are 'suspects'

Madeleine McCann

Police in Portugal have named the parents of missing child Madeleine McCann as suspects in the case.

The law in Portugal is different to the UK. Being named as suspects does not necessarily mean Kate and Gerry McCann were involved in the disappearance.

But it allows police to ask Madeleine's mum and dad more questions and also gives the couple more legal rights.

Madeleine, four, disappeared from her family's holiday apartment on 3 May, while her parents were out nearby.

Madeleine's mum and dad, from Rothley, Leicestershire, said they'd been having dinner at a nearby restaurant and were checking on Madeleine and her little brother and sister every half hour when she disappeared.

The couple were questioned separately for more than 24 hours before police named them as suspects.

Both say they had nothing to do with Madeleine's disappearance.
