England footie team under threat

English football teams spent more than half a billion pounds on buying players this summer.

Of the £530m spent, around half of it (£265m) was spent on buying players from other English teams.

The same amount was spent on stars from other countries, and with so many foreign players coming into the English league, some experts are worried.

Sir Trevor Brooking, who's in charge of developing young English players, said he thought it was a "major concern".

He said he was sure the growing number of foreign players meant there were fewer spots in top level teams for young English players.

Of the 118 goals scored so far this season, only nine have been scored by English strikers
Non-English players have scored 69% of Premier League goals so far
Only 37% of the players who started matches for Premier League clubs on the first weekend of this season were English
That makes it difficult for those players to improve as they aren't able to play enough matches.

Eventually, Sir Trevor is worried that it will mean there won't be enough good players for the boss of the England team to choose a squad from.

Sir Trevor, who played 47 times for England, added: "We have nowhere near the depth we should have and that will be an issue as soon as you pick up injuries."
