Australia remembers Steve Irwin

Australia Zoo in Queensland

People across Australia are remembering crocodile hunter Steve Irwin, who died on this day a year ago.

Crowds have been heading to the Australia Zoo in Queensland which Steve Irwin and his family owned to leave flowers and messages.

Steve died on 4 September 2006 when he was stung by a stingray while filming one of his TV shows.

Since then Steve's daughter Bindi has started becoming a TV star too, making films about animals like her dad.

Steve's wife Terri has said she wants people to use 15 November as a day to remember his life.

That was the day one of his favourite animals - a giant Galapagos tortoise called Harriet - was born, 176 years ago.

Terri wants everyone to wear khaki shirts like Steve did on that day to remember him.

Most people know Steve from his 46 Crocodile Hunter films, which were watched by more than 200 million people around the world.
