US bridge 'design issue' found

Officials hunt for bodies in the river

Investigators looking into why a motorway bridge collapsed in America last week have said they are looking closely at its structure.

They are examining the steel plates which connect the bridge in the hope of finding out what went wrong.

Seven people are now known to have died in the accident and six people are still missing.

Divers are still trying to cut through the tangled wreckage of the bridge in the search for more bodies.

The eight-lane motorway bridge caved in without warning last Wednesday, throwing cars, vans and buses into the Mississippi river.

Safety inspections

The 40-year-old I-35W highway bridge was being repaired at the time of the collapse.

The US government has ordered safety inspections on around 700 similar bridges across the country.
