Kid films help set cinema record

The Simpsons movie

Kids' films helped British and Irish cinemas set a record for the amount of money spent on tickets in one weekend.

More than 20m was spent in cinemas between Friday and Sunday, with Harry Potter, Transformers and The Simpsons Movie all doing really well.

Some 20,038,938m was spent, beating the old record of 19.2m, set back in November 2005.

There was a bit of magical help on that weekend too, as Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire was in cinemas then.

The boss of one cinema chain said: "This record weekend clearly shows that it remains one of the nation's top entertainment choices."
