Giant manta ray born in captivity

Manta Ray

The first giant manta ray to be born in captivity took its first public swim in front of visitors to an aquarium in south Japan.

Workers at the aquarium say that the manta, a girl, is the first to be born away from the sea.

The creature may be young but measures just under two metres wide - that's about the same length as an adult!

Spokesperson Minoru said: "The birth will let us have a clearer idea of the mysteries surrounding the manta ray."
