Golfer, 12, swings into US Open

Alexis Thompson

A 12-year-old girl has become the youngest ever golfer to make it to the US Women's Open - one of the biggest golfing tournaments in the world.

Alexis Thompson, from America, will be one of 156 players hoping to win the title when the competition swings off on 28 June.

The golfer is seven months younger than previous record holder Morgan Pressel.

Alexis was one of eight players from her home state of Florida to get a place in the Open competition.

Golf has been part of Alexis' life since she was five-years-old and she practices every day after school with her two older brothers.

British golfers Jo Head and Janice Moodie have also qualified for the competition.
