Fencing keeps you super fit

Press Packer Benedict and his fencing mates

Press Packer Benedict loves going to his fencing club. He fills us in on how to play the sport and why he likes it so much. Here's his report.

"Fencing is when you have a sword and you score points by hitting your opponent in the chest.

At my school we have an after-school fencing club where we learn to fence.

It is very hard to pick up fencing, and it takes quite a lot of practice, but if you work hard you can learn quickly.

First of all you always do a warm-up to make sure you don't hurt yourself or pull and damage any muscles.

After you have done that, it's important that you get some kit on because the sword can hurt a lot.

The teachers then hand out the swords to us. A fencer's sword is called a foil and it's very bendy.

The moves

The first move you learn is called 'on-guard'. That is basically a position where you get ready to compete with another fencer.

After that you learn how to lunge. That is when you stab your sword at your opponent.

I think more people should learn fencing. It's loads of fun and keeps you fit too."

Benedict, 9, Gwent
