Army tackles hairy caterpillars

The Belgian army is being brought in to tackle loads of hairy caterpillars which are creating havoc in a forest.

The caterpillars have long hairs which can be harmful to humans. Lots of people have visited doctors in the area with skin and breathing problems.

A group of soldiers are being sent in to help get rid of the creatures before the situation gets any worse.

Belgian soldiers have worked in places like Afghanistan, but officials say they must also help local people.

The soldiers will spend six weeks in Limburg in eastern Belgium, working tree-by-tree to get rid of the caterpillars.

"In teams of two people, they will go through the forests and burn them off the trees," said an army spokesperson.
