Guides: Picking the Prime Minister

Last Updated: Thursday May 10 2007 08:59 GMT

Who wants the job?

Inside the House Of Commons

Politicians who want to replace Mr Blair or Mr Prescott have the next three days on which the House Of Commons is open to put in papers saying they are interested.

To get to be one of the people in the official vote, they must get the support from at least 12.5% of all the other Labour MPs - that means they need support from at least 44 of them.

It will take about another week for the candidates who will take part in the contest to be known.

Then the candidates go out campaigning.
