Australia scoop Cricket World Cup

Australia celebrate

Australia have won their third Cricket World Cup in a row after seeing off Sri Lanka with a 53-run victory in the final in Barbados.

The match ended in confusion. The Aussies started celebrating when there were three overs left after Sri Lanka's batsmen went in because of bad light.

But then the stumps were put back in, and Sri Lanka returned - to bat in the dark, reaching 215-8 by the last ball.

Australia - who won the toss and batted first - notched up 281-4.

Rain delayed the toss, leading to a hold-up of two hours and 20 minutes before a ball was bowled.

Australia's star was Adam Gilchrist, who hit 149 off 104 balls - one of the best innings in the history of the World Cup.

The team also said farewell to bowler Glenn McGrath, who is retiring from international cricket after many years at the top.
