Springtime seems more like summer

May blossom

April is traditionally famous for its showers - but the sun has been shining like it's the middle of summer.

Lots of people enjoy the warm weather, but experts are worried about the effect it's having on our wildlife, which is used to different conditions.

A BBC survey has shown that plants and animals which aren't usually seen until later in the year have made an early appearance in 2007.

Climate change is caused by gases which trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere.

Many businesses and individuals are doing their best to change their behaviour to cut down on these gases being released, but it's a major problem.

Over the years, the first signs of summer have included May trees (also called hawthorn) blossoming and the appearance of swifts to the UK.

Early

As the tree's name suggests, the blossom isn't usually out until the month of May, with the swifts turning up at around the same time.

But both the blossom and the birds are around already, the BBC survey revealed.

"If hawthorn flowering four weeks earlier isn't enough of a sign of climate change, then sightings of the first swifts seen flying across the south east and Gloucestershire over the past few days certainly are," said one expert.
