Oxfam launches £5m Darfur appeal

Children in Darfur

The charity Oxfam is hoping to raise £5m to help people living in the North African country of Sudan.

Over the last few years, fighting between two rival groups has made the Darfur region of Sudan dangerous and at least 300,000 people have died there.

Two million people have been forced to flee their homes and many more rely on help and supplies from other countries.

Oxfam says the money is needed to help people stay alive while politicians decide how to deal with the crisis.

Thousands of children and their families have also fled to neighbouring country Chad to escape the violence.

More help needed

At the moment, Oxfam is providing about 500,000 people with water and sanitation, as well as basic necessities including blankets and soap.

But the charity says more money is needed to make sure people in both Sudan and Chad have the basics like clean water and shelter.
