Paws appeal makes stars of otters

Mylo and Nyack holding paws

A pair of sea otters have become global stars after a video of them holding paws while floating in water was posted on the internet.

Mylo and Nyack were filmed relaxing in the water, paw in paw, by a visitor at Vancouver aquarium in Canada.

They might look cute, but animal experts say holding paws is a matter of survival for the endangered otters.

Sea otters learn to link paws so they don't get separated from friends and family in rough waters in the wild.

Since the film of the otters was posted on the internet two weeks ago, more than 1.5 million people have watched it and the otters have become the star attraction at their aquarium.

One woman said she thought they looked like swimming teddy bears.

Aquarium bosses are now hoping that Mylo and Nyack's fame will make people more aware that sea otters are an endangered animal.
