New cycling safety test for kids

Girl on a bike

Next month you'll be able to take a new test to prove you're safe riding your bicycle on the road.

The new Bikeability exam will replace the old-style Cycling Proficiency Test and will be taught in schools across England from April.

The aim of the new test is to teach you how to ride on roads and get you all up to the same standard of road safety.

It's part of a plan to try to get more children to cycle to school, instead of going in a car.

It's thought nine out of 10 of you have never cycled to school.

The old Cycling Proficiency Test was mainly taught in your playground but much of the Bikeability exam will be taken on roads.

There are three levels to the new test:

  • Level 1 - learning to ride off the road and away from traffic
  • Level 2 - real cycling experience on safe roads
  • Level 3 - learn how to ride in different traffic conditions and some dangers

And for each level pass you'll get a metal badge, booklet, certificate and a letter to your parent or carer.

The group that runs the test, Cycling England, has said it hopes that within five years all children will have passed the test by the time they leave school.
