Single review: Avril Lavigne

Avril Lavigne

Release date

Download - Out now, CD - 2 April

The sound

Avril Lavigne, who sang 'Sk8r Boi' and 'Complicated', is back with a new sound. Marrying Sum41 singer Derek Whibley seems to have made her a lot happier. 'Girlfriend' is energetic, fun and much less serious than any of her old songs.

The words

It's all about Avril wanting to go out with a boy who already has a girlfriend.

"Hey! Hey! You! You! I don't like your girlfriend! No way! No way! I think you need a new one. Hey! Hey! You! You! I could be your girlfriend", she shouts!

Will you still be humming it next week?

Yes. And the week after. And the week after that too. It's infectious pop. But the video's a bit mean Avril! We felt a bit sorry for the girl whose boyfriend you are trying to steal!

How will it do in the charts?

Avril has proven she's a really versatile artist. It may turn off a lot of her old followers but she's likely to attract a new legion of pop fans. It'll be a top 10 hit for sure!
