'Missing track' caused rail crash

The crash site

A massive train crash that killed one woman and injured loads of other people was caused by problems on the track, accident investigators have found.

The first report into the cause of Friday's crash in Cumbria found part of the rails, called points, were missing.

Points are where the line divides and the train is sent either to the left or to the right onto a different track.

Bosses at Network Rail, which looks after the tracks, said they were "devastated" by the report.

They also apologised to everyone who's been affected by the track problems.

The track is staying closed until investigators are sure it's safe enough to run trains on.

Network Rail said they've checked 700 sets of points all over the country since the crash, and found nothing wrong.
