Have you had a Heelys accident?

Heelys

A 12-year-old boy is seriously ill after getting hit by a car when he was crossing the road wearing his Heelys.

Heelys are shoes which look like normal trainers, but they have hidden wheels which turn them into skates.

They were a popular Christmas present, but several kids have contacted Newsround to tell us about accidents involving Heelys.

Have you had an accident? Maybe you know someone who has? Maybe you think Heelys are safe and people should be more careful?

Unfortunately this topic is now closed but there are Comments pages on other subjects on the main Chat index.

I think that Heelys are good if you go on smooth pavments.
Lucy, 8, Nalisea

Heelys were around about 6 years ago and eveyone in my class wanted them but then after about 3 months they went out of fashion. This is exacly what is going to happen now. Its alright to use them as long as you're careful but they will go out of fashion soon!
Maria, 13, Chelmsford

I don't have Heelys. I guess if you're not careful and you're not wearing safety gear then it can be dangerous. Anything could go wrong.
Phoebe, 12Wokingham

I have Heelys and when you know how to use them they are perfectly safe. Also, I think it is a bit stupid to cross the road with them or go up a pavement, it says on the box to use them on flat ground.
Joe, 11, London

I think they are dangerous but only when you are not wearing gear and a helmet. But if you wear no gear with one heel then you will really hurt yourself.
Larah, 8, Exeter

I think Heelys are dangerous and should be banned from London because if someone is going across the road they might get run over.
Jamal, 9, Mitcham

I have a pair of Heelys and I got them for Chistmas. I am getting worried because I might fall into the road.
George, 8, Mitcham

I think that Heelys are as dangerous as any other thing you ride on, eg. skateboards, bikes. If physiotherapists say they are bad for your back, why don't they say the same thing about high heels shoes?
Jack, 11, Darlington

I think Heelys are for show off 7-8 year olds, they are only going to end up hurting themselves.
Emily, 12, Worthing

I'm careful on my Heelys, I've not had an accident yet, and I've had them for 3 years now.
julianna, 10, Morcambe

I think Heelys are hard to use but when you learn how to use them, you can be ok. I fell outside the pound shop in Derry and everyone laughed at me.
Matthew, 12, Derry

I think Heelys are safe as long as you don't get carried away and try some tricks or it could come to a serious accident. Children need to take responsibility for their actions.
Jerry, 11, London

I think Heelys are fine as long as you know how to ride them!
Natalie, 10, Tunbridge Wells

Heelys are seriously cool, but I fall over all the time with my friends and family
Kierah, 10, Diss

I haven't got Heelys but I am getting some soon! I think Heelys are fantastic and great fun and I don't think they should be banned because of accidents. You just need to take it easy and just be careful. Don't try to do any of the tricks because that's how most accidents with Heelys happen.
Francesca, 12, Cheltenham

I don't think Heelys are dangerous. If they are banned then bikes, skateboards and rollerblades should be banned too. My friend has a pair though. He didn't take the wheels out and was walking down a very steep hill when he fell backwards, started rolling down then finally went too far backwards and went up 1ft in the air then crashing down. Braking his arm and leg. USE THEM RESPONSIBLY!
Joshua, 13, Pontypool

I sliced my knee when I was going up my driveway. It was the Wednesday after Christmas and I was wearing my new Christmas jeans - lol. ps: now my jeans have a big hole in them
Nicole, 10, Belfast

I have got a pair of Heelys and you just have to get used to them. I fell off mine and it hurt but they can be really fun as well!!
Joni, 11, Belfast

Heelys are dangerous for playing on.
Beth, 8, Wallingford

I was in town and skating around when suddenly one of my heels just went forward and I did the splits in jeans and they split and I twisted my foot and sprained my hand!!!
Chloe, 11, Binfield

My friend fell over in her kitchen and broke her wrist.
Jake, 10, Hadleigh

I have had a pair of Heelys for a month now...they only took me a week to master. When I was practising I always wore safety gear. Besides, Heelys look cool and the worst injury I got was a scraped hand when I grabbed a tree when I was practising.
Kelly, 13, Leicester

They should be stopped because someone could brake their neck.
Codie, 8, Bentley

I have not fallen off my Heelys, but my friend has. She broke her wrist. Her Mum has now taken the wheels out.
Grace, 8, Uxbridge

People think just because the boy got hit by the automobile wearing Heelys, it is automatically the Heelys fault, people get hit by automobiles every day. If someone got hit wearing trainers, they wouldn't blame the trainers. The boy probably wasn't looking when he got hit. DON'T BLAME THE SHOES.
Rhys, 12, Wales

I have Heelys and I always go on them, I have never hurt myself and I think they're perfectly safe.
Vicky, 12, Durham

I think Heelys are dangerous, my friend in school has some and she fell over and badly twisted her ankle.
Samantha, 9, Cheshire

I think Heelys are perfectly safe as long as you are careful. My dad used to climb trees and broke his arm once and no one ever thought there was a problem. So what is the problem with Heelys?
Mirander, 12, Callington

I think Heelys are stupid shoes - they're dangerous and they look bad.
Hatty, 12, Oxford

Heelys should never have been invented as too many people are injured by them. People should be able to walk down to the local shop without being scared of being injured by someone who is wearing Heelys.
Kerry, 12, Hull

I have some Heelys and they're great fun. If you're careful then you won't hurt yourself. I don't think crossing the road using the wheels is being careful. I only use them in smooth dry areas e.g. a shopping centre, when it's not crowded.
Luke, 12, Salford

Heelys are really good but people need to be more careful and wear safety pads. So if you have some be CAREFUL!!!!
Chels, 11, Bristol

You are safe on Heelys as long as you don't use them in busy places or crossing roads.
Iain, 11, Edinburgh

I have a pair of Heelys and they are just as dangerous as a skateboard, people shouldn't go outside if they're not good at them.
Georgia, 9, Essex

My friend was on her Heelys and fell back on her ankle. She was on crutches for weeks and weeks. She could not go to any of the sporting activities she loves so much.
Emily, 10, Kilmeaden

I haven't got Heelys but my friend has and she has only had 2 or 3 falls on them...I had a go and as soon as I put them on I fell over, it was a hard landing!
Ella, 11, Liss

I think people are going over the top. I think they're fine, and I would not cross with them when a car is coming, I use them in a sensible way.
Assma, 11, London

My cousin nearly twisted her ankle on her Heelys.
Alexandra, 10, Shirley

I think Heelys are cool but I think you have to be very careful because they can cause injuries. My friend hurt her leg.
Ruth, 9, Wellington

I think Heelys are ok if you know how to use them but you still have to stay safe!!
Hanz, 12, Aberdeen

I have never had a serious accident. You are bound to fall over once.
Joseph, 12, Farnham

Heelys have been banned at my local shopping centre because a boy was on the escalator with Heelys on and he fell and badly hurt himself.
Emma, 11, Glasgow

I was skating through a shopping centre and my wheels got stuck in a divot and my face hit the ground.
Ben, 12, Mattingley

You're safe on Heelys as long as you're careful. Try practising at home if you want to be able to do tricks and don't go outside with them if you're not good at them
Rose, 10, Godalming

I think that Heelys are perfectly safe but it would be better if people wouldn't use them on a road.
Jessica, 8, Edinburgh

I don't think that Heelys are a good thing. Lots of people in my class fall over when they have Heelys on. I would ban them from shops.
Hannah, 8, Edinburgh

I think Heelys are silly. They are not only dangerous but it said in the newspaper that they are bad for your feet!
Cameron, 8, Edinburgh

I have Heelys. They are very dangerous but very fun. I don't use them on the road. Because of the accident I am much more scared of them, although I would not ban them from schools or shops.
Mhari, 8, Edinburgh

I think that only children aged 13 or over should have Heelys. Maybe we could start a petition.
Connor, 8, Edinburgh

I think Heelys are not dangerous it's just the people that don't look that get run over by cars, but if you get hurt it's just like falling on roller blades.
Andy, 12, Alva

They are dangerous and unsafe - they should be banned.
Danielle, 11, Loughborough

I think if you're just walking around with them on, take the wheels out! I have a pair but I always take the wheels out if I'm walking or mucking about!
Laura, 12, Kendal

I've got Heelys and they are the best things ever. I've fallen lots but that's how you learn. If you ban Heelys you've got to ban rollerblades and bikes because people fall off them too.
Amy, 12, Bradford

We both use our Heelys safely and responsibly. We would never try and cross the road in them or use them on pavements or crowded areas. You have to think of the safety of other people as well as yourself. Some adults are really rude to us when we use them...we are just having fun!!
Hannah and Billy, 10 and 12, Cornwall

I'm really careful when I'm using my Heelys, making sure I don't go anywhere dangerous or crash into people.
Olivia, 9, Surrey
