UK to host huge Star Wars event

Listen up, Star Wars fans - a massive event is being held in London to mark the 30th anniversary of the series.

Called Celebration Europe, the event will run for three days and will feature stars from all six of the movies plus many other attractions.

Star Wars Celebration events, backed by the movies' makers Lucasfilm, have been held in America since 1999.

The first one to hit the UK will take place at the Excel exhibition centre in east London from 13 to 15 July.

Event director Barry Eldridge told Newsround that there will be a Jedi training academy, costume competition and an autograph-signing section.

"We're hoping that people from across Europe will attend," he said, adding that the event will also feature life-sized replicas of Star Wars vehicles as well as stuff from the Lucasfilm archives.

Star Wars started in 1977 - before you were born, but loads of kids have got into the series through the newer films.

'Great characters'

Asked to explain why kids love Star Wars so much, Barry said: "There are great characters. The bad guys look nasty and the good guys look good and are heroes - and it's fun."

Kids under eight who are with adult ticket-holders get in free.

Eight to 12-year-olds will be charged 27 for a three-day pass and 11.25 for a one-day pass, if booked in advance.
