Film review: Shrek the Third

Shrek the Third

Release date

June 29 (cert U)

The stars

Shrek is voiced by Mike Myers. His sidekick Donkey is voiced by Eddie Murphy, Antonio Banderas is the voice of Puss 'n Boots and Cameron Diaz plays Princess Fiona. Justin Timberlake joins an all-star cast as Fiona's long lost cousin Arthur (Artie).

The plot

King Harold, the ruler of Far Far Away, dies and the rule of the Kingdom is supposed to be handed to Shrek. As you can imagine, this scares the living daylights out of him and even gives him nightmares! So he goes searching for Fiona's long lost cousin Arthur who is the only other possible heir to the throne. Of course his buddies Donkey, and Puss 'n Boots accompany him.

Mike Myers and Justin Timberlake

While he's away Prince Charming takes Princess Fiona, Queen Lillian, Snow White and a few others hostage! Prince Charming thinks he should be ruling the Kingdom and wants to show everyone who's boss!

When Shrek comes back Far Far Away is a very different place. Now he has a fight on his hands to defeat the Prince. But who will win - and will the Kingdom of Far Far Away live happily ever after?

Bests bits

When Shrek tries his hand at being 'King'. His attempt at christening a ship and trying to give a knighthood are pretty funny.

Also, when the girls are taken hostage, it's pretty funny watching their reactions and how they deal with it.

Fave characters

All of the familiar Disney characters like Snow White, Cinderella and Rapunzel.

Any weak bits?

It's great to have Justin Timberlake in the film, and actually his character is quite an important part of the film - but he isn't a strong voice and actually, if you weren't told it was him voicing the part, you would never know.

Hit or miss?

It's definitely one to see - the story does move on quite nicely.

There are loads of really funny jokes in the first two Shrek films - but the third isn't nearly as funny, so be warned!

NR rating:

Four out of five

Your Comments

"I think that Shrek the Third is a fantastic film! It is packed with humour and joy! If you haven't already seen it, then make sure you do! It's really brilliant!"

Sanaa, 12, Manchester

"Shrek the Third is a really good movie. It is sad, happy and funny at the same time. I think it is the best movie I have seen this year! I really hope there is a Shrek four! I would like to see how the triplets turn out!"

Linsey, 10, Wishaw

"I loved it - I imagined Snow White would be really sweet but she was quite cheeky. 100 out of 10 from me!"

Chloe, 11, Hemel Hempstead

"I saw Shrek 3 last week - it was so funny. I loved the bit when Snow White gave Fiona a dwarf as a present and I liked seeing baby dragon/donkeys."

Emma, 11, Gateshead

"I enjoyed the film but I think the other Shrek films were better. I enjoyed the Princesses trying to save the Kingdom and found all the characters very funny. I noticed when the Queen head-butted the wall, she hummed "My Favourite things" from the Sound of Music. I enjoyed this film but I don't think they should make a fourth one."

Alexandra, 11, Glasgow

"I thought is was the best so far. I loved it so much - I had to watch it again! The Princesses were really cool and Justin Timberlake did a brilliant job voicing Artie! My only question, what happened to Prince Charming?"

Emmie, 13, Manchester

"Shrek the Third was the best one so far! The best bit was when the Queen head-butted the wall."

Ellena, 9, Evesham

"Shrek the Third is brilliant. Donkey has children with the dragon and Shrek has triplets with Fiona. Shrek the Third was amazing! The animation was brilliant as usual. The cast was wicked and Justin Timberlake, who voiced Arthur, did a good job."

Amina, 9, Manchester

"I think it was quite funny, but not as good as the first and second films."

Elizabeth, 12, Stockport

"It was so funny! It was funny when Donkey was in Puss In Boot's body and when Puss In Boots was in Donkey's body! It was the best film I've ever seen!"

Helena, 11, London

"A really good film. Not as good as the first two but still worth seeing!"

Eliza, 13

"Shrek the Third was amazing! The animation was brilliant as usual. The cast was wicked and Justin Timberlake, who voiced Arthur, did a good job."

Katie, 13, Nottingham

"Shrek 3 was really boring! There were some funny parts and there was a good build up to the finale. But the finale was probably the worst I've ever seen. There was no originality. All the baddies just decided to be good! One of the worst films of 2007 so far."

Peter, 13, Lisburn

"I watched it today! It was great! But the only problem is Shrek does not save the day... Arthur (Justin Timberlake) does. But the film was still a blast!"

Rachael, 10, London

"How computer animated can you get? It's way too American!"

Beth, 10, West Sussex

"I thought the film was funny and a great family film but I was a bit disappointed. I would say the other two were better, but that's my personal opinion."

Joseph, 11, Folkestone

"I think there should have been more funny bits but overall it was a great film and the Shrek Babies were really cute!"

Ross, 10, Edinburgh

"It was amazing! I loved the bit when King Harold keeps dieing and coming back to life. 9 out of 10."

Ben, 11, Chesterfield

"I thought Shrek the Third was great and really funny! My favourite character would have to be Princess Fiona and Donkey. I would recommend it."

Aimee, 9, Blackpool
