Teen sails into record books

Michael Perham in Antigua

A 14-year-old boy has become the youngest person to sail across the Atlantic Ocean on his own.

Michael Perham arrived in the Caribbean island of Antigua at 2pm on Wednesday after a six-week voyage on board his boat Cheeky Monkey.

Michael, who's been sailing since he was six, took the title from Seb Clover, who crossed the ocean aged 15.

"It feels absolutely fantastic being back on dry land, absolutely brilliant," said Michael.

Michael's route

The voyage started in Gibraltar, and Michael kept himself occupied by playing his guitar and revising for his GCSEs!

Mother Heather Perham said her son had been inspired by Seb Clover's record in 2003.

She told him over the phone: "It's a huge accomplishment for yourself and to set an example for other young people to have adventures and live life to the full."
