Burglars steal emu in wheelie bin

An emu like the one which is missing

A emu has been stolen from an animal centre after burglars are thought to have hidden it in a wheelie bin.

Police say that the bin was pushed for nearly a mile before being left and the emu taken.

The large bird, which comes from Australia, has gone missing from Lords House Farm in Blackburn.

A spokeswoman for the farm said that she was worried that the bird may be hurt after suffering the shock of being squashed inside the bin.

Kathryn Thacker said that emus are strong and "would have put up a struggle".

The missing emu is called Rod and was named after famous entertainer Rod Hull who had a puppet emu.
