'Lazy bat' makes record trip

The baby bat

A baby bat which is known for being lazy has stunned experts by flying more than 100 miles in record time.

The winged wonder flew from her bat nest in Gloucestershire to another one in Dorset in less than three months.

But she's a rare greater horseshoe bat which is a lazy species and rarely flies more than 20 metres from home.

Experts know it's the same bat as she was tagged from birth. "This is an amazing journey for such a tiny animal to take," one expert said.

The little bat, which is only six months old, also managed to avoid being eaten on the way, even though it would almost certainly have come across lots of other animals which eat it.

A few other long journeys by these bats have been recorded, but they've taken around two years to travel the same distance.

There's around 7,000 greater horseshoe bats in the UK, living at 12 different sites. They get their name from a horseshoe-shaped ring of skin around their nose.
